(As fatigue is hard to spot and can\u2019t be tested for in the same way that drugs and alcohol in a driver\u2019s system can be, the figures might actually be higher.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of fatigue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many factors can contribute to driver tiredness and fatigue including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stress:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signs stress could be affecting your sleep:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>finding it difficult to fall asleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lying awake at night or unable to sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>waking up several times during the night<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>waking up early and are unable to drift back off to sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>finding it hard to nap during the day even though you\u2019re tired<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>finding yourself feeling tired and irritable during the day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>finding it difficult to concentrate during the day because you\u2019re tired<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>still feel tired after waking up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many factors can contribute to this such as a change in life such as a new baby, work stress, busy schedules, or sleep disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Insomnia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be caused by many things with the most common causes being:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine intake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>noise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>jet lag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>room temperature \u2013 a room that is too hot or cold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shift work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stress, anxiety, or depression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uncomfortable beds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recreational drugs (e.g., cocaine or ecstasy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sleep apnoea:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factors that increase the risk of this form of sleep apnoea include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excess weight.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neck circumference.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A narrowed airway.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being male.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being older.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family history.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of alcohol, sedatives, or tranquilizers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoking.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nasal congestion.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical conditions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heart disorders.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using narcotic pain medications.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stroke.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irregular sleep patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Time of day:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accidents caused by tired drivers tend to happen in the early hours (2am-6am) and early afternoon (2pm-4pm). The body clock during these times reaches a natural dip, causing drowsiness and reduced concentration. This is where they briefly fall asleep, resulting in them having no control over the car for a short period of time. Drivers are often unaware that they have briefly fallen asleep (for between two and thirty seconds) believing they have simply nodded their head. Those seconds can literally mean life or death as losing consciousness for a couple of seconds is ample time for a car to travel and cause a fatal crash upon impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risks associated with driving when tired&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drink and drug driving are well documented in the news, however, driving when tired can be just as dangerous.
