Countryfile, the popular TV show, recently approached Harrison Spinks, who produce the luxurious Somnus Beds, requesting to do a piece on their farm, as they were interested on their diversification, particularly the idea that Harrison Spinks ‘grow their own beds’.
Adam Henson and his small crew, Ruth the producer and the cameraman all stayed at the Somnus farm on the Monday evening, where Somnus have their own flock of sheep. The main interest was the fact that they grow their own fillings, that each year the hemp, flax and wool are all processed locally on their farm and transported to the Leeds factory where they go to make the mattress fillings.
The team from Countryfile spent the afternoon in the factory in Leeds observing how the life of a bed begins, from the raw materials they had seen on the farm, to the luxurious handmade beds and mattresses that are produced.
These are some of the natural products that go into making their luxurious mattresses.
A layer of horse hair is added to the mattress as it is highly flexible and provides natural bounce. Horse hair is the strongest, longest and most resilient fiber of bed upholstery fibers.
Finest silk fibres are blended into a durable insulation layer inside the mattress, providing a luxurious and supportive feel.
Egyptian cotton layer with responsive properties that complement the spring unit is added to the mattress to help provide a luxurious and comfortable feel.
Wool is used in this mattress as a soft and insulating upholstery layer for added comfort. Wool is a natural insulator providing coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. Offering superb comfort, it also has hydroscopic properties encouraging the evaporation of body moisture.
The advanced pocket spring system is the best at providing individual support to the sleeper. The upper layer of springs shape to the body contours while the lower layer’s absorbs changes in weight distribution for the ultimate in comfort and support. As a rule of thumb the higher the number of individual springs, the more support will be provided to the sleeper.
