Sleep

Sleep is an essential function and a good night’s sleep is crucial to your health and wellbeing. The average person sleeps for 8 hours a day meaning we spend one-third of our life in bed! To ensure you have a good night’s sleep night after night, it is important that the surface you are sleeping on is the best possible one to suit you. We should all wake feeling recharged and refreshed each morning, however, many of us do not due to not having the most suitable mattress for our needs.

FAQ about mattresses

What is the best mattress?

With so many mattresses available on the market, it can be difficult to know where to start when shopping for a new mattress. The ‘best’ is one that suits your own needs and is within your budget. Our bed experts will be able to guide you through a range of questions to help you decide what it is you are looking for then help you find the best mattress for you at the greatest possible price.

Which mattress is right for me?

Just as we are all individual, so too are our sleep needs. Choosing the right mattress is dependent on many factors and is a personal choice. The ideal way to discover your preferred choice is to lie on each one in store. However, if this is not possible, consider the following when making your choice: your sleeping position, body type, others sleeping in the bed with you and personal preferences (soft, medium firm feel). Give our team a call on 01928 242 829 for more, free independent advice.

What type of mattress should I get if I sleep on my side?

Side sleepers should always look for mattresses that respond to the curves in their body and offer support and pressure point relief, notably for the ears, shoulders, and hips. Although side sleepers can opt for a variety of mattress types and fillings, providing they offer adequate support and cushioning, you might prefer a medium comfort grade. Side sleepers below 14 stone can opt for softer options, while side sleepers over fourteen stone should consider a medium firm comfort. The heavier you are, the firmer your mattress should be to ensure it offers you the support you need.

What type of mattress should I get if I sleep on my back?

Medium to very firm mattresses make an ideal choice for back sleepers as they supply the spine alignment and support needed to prevent back problems. Pressure points for back sleepers include the shoulders, bottom, heels and most importantly, the spine. Sleepers weighing more than fourteen stone should opt for a firm or very firm mattress to prevent their spine sinking into the mattress adding extra pressure and causing back problems. Traditional spring, pocket spring, memory foam and orthopaedic mattresses are all popular choices for back sleepers.

What type of mattress should I get if I sleep on my stomach/front?

Front/stomach sleepers often find medium, medium firm, or firm mattresses supply the level of support needed to keep the natural alignment of their spine. Pressure points for front sleepers are typically the rib cage, knees, and thighs, however, these points require less support and cushioning so the focus for front sleepers is the spine. Too soft a mattress can result in the torso sinking into the mattress resulting in an arched spine, aches, and pains. Too firm a mattress will prevent your spine from falling into its natural curve, again causing aches and pains. Popular mattress choices for front sleepers include pocket spring mattresses, memory foam mattresses and mattresses made up of different fillings (combination and hybrid mattresses).

What type of mattress is best for a bad back?

There is a wide range of mattresses aimed at promoting spinal alignment and relieving back pain. People often associate back pain with needing a firm mattress, this is not always the case as a mattress that is too firm will not supply the support your spine needs. A firmer mattress is better for sleepers who weigh sixteen stones or more while sleepers suffering from back pain and weighing ten stones or below, typically prefer a softer, supportive mattress. Options include orthopaedic mattresses, spring based/hybrid mattresses, latex filled and memory foam. What works well for one person with back pain might not be the best solution for another. Our bed experts can help you find a mattress that suits you best and alleviates your back pain. Email them today at sales@landofbeds.co.uk.

What size mattress do I need?

Certain factors such as whether you asleep alone or with a partner, your body type (height and build), room size, and bed frame type will all affect the size of mattress you require. We have mattresses available in a wide range of sizes to suit all needs.

Mattress measurements:

  • Small Single mattress = 75cm x 190cm / 2ft 6” x 6ft 3” ideal for small rooms and guest beds.
  • Single mattress = 90cm x 190cm / 3ft x 6ft 3” ideal for one person.
  • Small Double mattress = 120cm x 190cm / 4ft x 6ft 3” ideal for one person or couples with a small bedroom
  • Double mattress = 135cm x 190cm / 4ft6”x 6ft 3” ideal for two people and a small to average sized bedroom.
  • King size mattress = 150cm x 200cm / 5ft x 6ft 6” ideal for two people and those taller than 190cm/6ft 2”.
  • European king size mattress = 160cm x 200cm / 5ft 3” x 6ft 6” ideal for two people and those looking for more space in bed.
  • Super king size mattress = 180cm x 200cm / 6ft x 6ft 6” ideal for two or more people and those who like extra space in bed.

Our bed experts will be able to help you check the actual dimensions of your bed frame and mattress (if buying separately) to ensure they are a size match.

How firm or soft do I need my mattress?

Tension feel is determined by the mattress’s construction and materials while comfort is subjective.

  • Firm mattresses offer great support but are not so good at offering pressure relief. They are typically cooler than soft mattresses and often appeal to stomach sleepers.
  • Medium mattresses are often referred to as offering universal comfort, supplying the perfect balance between soft and firm. They are an excellent choice for those suffering from back pain as they supply enough compression to contour to the body while preventing the spine from sinking, helping to keep a neutral position.
  • Soft mattresses can be pressure relieving but usually lack support for back and front sleepers. Ideal for side sleepers and those who like to sink into their mattress, however, they are not able to manage heavier weights.

All tensions are clearly shown on our mattresses at Land of Beds and our bed experts are on hand to guide you further.

Tension grading at Land of Beds:

  • 1 = Soft – Good for side sleepers. The softest level of support.
  • 2 = Soft medium – Good for side sleepers who require a little more support.
  • 3 =Medium – Good all rounder for front, side or back sleepers.
  • 4 = Medium firm – Good for people who change sleeping position.
  • 5 = Firm – Good for people who sleep on their front or back.
  • 6 = Extra firm – The firmest level of support. Also known as orthopaedic.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Unfortunately, there is no “one size fits all” answer however, a quality mattress ought to last 7-10 years.

Signs your mattress needs replacing

  • your mattress is sagging or has lumps
  • you are waking with aches and pains
  • you do not feel refreshed upon waking
  • you are sneezing more when you get into bed or wake up.
  • your mattress has a foul odour
  • your body has changed (shape, size, health conditions)

Can I just replace the mattress, or do I need to buy a new bed frame/base?

Yes, you can just replace the mattress, supplying the base you are putting your new mattress on to is the same size and in good condition. It is important to consider how long you have had your current base. If your budget allows, we highly recommend you buy a new base at the same time to ensure you get the best possible sleep platform.

How do I care for my mattress?

It is crucial that you look after your new mattress to ensure your warranty still is valid and to ensure mattress longevity. All our mattresses come with a handy care guide detailing how to best look after your mattress. We strongly recommend using a mattress protector to help keep your new investment in pristine condition. In addition, mattress protectors supply a barrier between you and any bed bugs or dust mites who might have taken up residence in your mattress.

How much should I look to spend on a new mattress?

The amount you should spend is a tricky question to answer. There is an old saying, ‘Invest in your shoes and your sheets because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other’ however, at Land of Beds, we recognise that everyone’s budget is different. We have a wide range of mattresses to suit all budgets. Our advice is, spend as much as you can to get what you want. Our independent bed experts are on hand to help you work out what it is you want in a mattress then help you to get this at the best possible price. What is a vacuum-packed mattress?

Often referred to as a ‘bed in a box’ or ‘rolled up’ mattresses, vacuum packed mattresses offer a supportive and comfortable night’s sleep. Offering the same support and comfort as traditional mattresses, these mattresses arrive boxed up, making delivery efficient and eco-friendlier. When taking delivery of a vacuum-packed mattress, simply unwrap in a well-ventilated room (windows open) and roll flat. Leave it a few hours to expand then climb into bed!

Can I sleep on my new mattress straight away?

Traditional, unrolled mattresses are ready for sleeping on instantly. Vacuum packed/rolled mattresses will typically require 2-6 hours to expand, however, they may not reach their greatest height for 48 hours. This is normal.
