Two people, one bed, completely different ideas about what a mattress should feel like. Sound familiar? A zip and link mattress is one of the most practical solutions we sell, and honestly one of the most underrated. Here is everything you need to know.

The short answer
A zip and link mattress is made up of two separate single mattresses, each with its own tension, that zip together to form one king, super king, or emperor size bed.

You get a seamless sleeping surface, minimal movement transfer between sides, and the ability to choose a completely different firmness for each sleeper.

They are also available in more sizes than most people expect, and are far easier to move through tight spaces than a traditional super king.

At its simplest, a zip and link mattress is two individual mattresses, typically two singles each 90cm wide, that have discreet zips along their edges. Pull them together and the zips fasten to create one seamless sleeping surface. Pull the zip undone and you have two completely independent single mattresses.

The design has been used in hotels for decades. It is how they switch a room from a twin to a king without any fuss. But it is increasingly popular for home use, particularly for couples who cannot agree on firmness, anyone who has ever tried to get a super king up a narrow staircase, or people who want the flexibility to separate the bed down the line.

“Zip and link is one of the most consistently underrated options we sell. People often assume it is a compromise, then realise it is actually the most tailored solution available. Two completely independent sleep surfaces, minimal movement transfer, and a choice of tension on each side. For couples with different body weights or sleeping positions, it can genuinely transform how well you both sleep.”

There are five genuine reasons to choose a zip and link over a traditional mattress. Not marketing points. Actual practical advantages.

Different tensions for each sleeper
This is the key benefit. You and your partner choose a different firmness for each side. Soft for the lighter sleeper, firm for the heavier one. No compromise. Each person gets exactly what their body needs.
Zero motion transfer
Because the two mattresses are physically separate, movement on one side is not felt on the other. If your partner is a restless sleeper, this makes a noticeable difference. It takes the logic of pocket springs one step further.
Easier to move and deliver
A super king mattress can be difficult to manoeuvre through tight spaces. A zip and link version is made up of two smaller mattresses, each far easier to move through doorways, around corners, or up stairs.
Longer lifespan
Each side rotates independently and wears more evenly because neither person is sleeping in the middle. There is also no shared roll-together zone, which is one of the most common causes of dips forming over time.
Flexible configuration
Need two singles for guests? Unzip and separate. Moving somewhere smaller? Use the halves individually. This flexibility is genuinely useful and often becomes more valuable over time.
A great fit if…
One of you is noticeably lighter or heavier than the other, or you have different sleeping positions. You have struggled to get a large mattress upstairs before. You like the idea of being able to reconfigure the bed in the future, whether for guests or a house move.
Less ideal if…
You tend to sleep right in the centre of the bed. While you will not feel the zip itself, some people may notice a slight difference where the two mattresses meet. Solo sleepers are usually better suited to a standard mattress at the same price point.
Worth knowing
Both halves need to come from the same brand and model range, as zip and link systems are not interchangeable between manufacturers. You can mix tensions within the same model, but not across different brands or constructions.
A mattress topper placed across the full width of both halves can smooth any slight difference at the join. Worth considering if either of you tends to sleep near the centre of the bed.

Most retailers only stock zip and link in super king. At Land of Beds we carry king, super king, small emperor, and emperor. Here is what each one means in practice.

Size Dimensions Each single half Best for
King zip and link 150cm x 200cm (5ft x 6ft 6in) 75cm x 200cm Standard bedrooms. Couples who want zip and link without moving up to super king
Super king zip and link 180cm x 200cm (6ft x 6ft 6in) 90cm x 200cm The most popular option. Two full single widths, one per person
Small emperor zip and link 180cm x 210cm (6ft x 6ft 11in) 90cm x 210cm Taller sleepers who want super king width with extra length
Emperor zip and link 200cm x 200cm (6ft 6in x 6ft 6in) 100cm x 200cm Large master bedrooms. Maximum personal space for each sleeper
King size zip and link halves are 75cm wide, slightly narrower than a standard single (90cm). Super king and larger sizes use full 90cm single halves, giving each person the equivalent of a standard single mattress.

Can you feel the zip in a zip and link mattress?

The honest answer
No. The zips on a well-made zip and link mattress sit along the side edge of each mattress, tucked neatly under the seam. When the two halves are joined, the seams fold over to conceal them completely, creating a seamless sleeping surface.

What you may notice very slightly is where the two mattresses meet in the centre, but you will not feel a zip beneath you. On higher-quality mattresses, proper edge support helps both sides sit flush together, keeping the surface even and consistent.

Pocket spring construction
Pocket springs, where each spring sits in its own fabric pocket, are the best choice for zip and link. Every spring moves independently, which keeps movement contained to one side. Open coil springs are interconnected and transfer movement across the mattress, removing one of the key benefits of the zip and link format.
Edge support on each half
Good edge support, often achieved through hand side stitching in premium mattresses, keeps the edges of each half firm and flush. This is what makes the join in the middle feel as seamless as possible and helps prevent the edges from softening over time.
Correct tension for each sleeper
As a starting point, lighter sleepers and side sleepers usually need a softer tension, while heavier sleepers and those who sleep on their back or front generally need something firmer. If you are unsure, this is one of the most useful things to talk through with us.
Natural fillings for breathability
Natural fillings such as wool and cotton help regulate temperature throughout the night. On a larger sleeping surface where two people are both generating body heat, breathability makes a noticeable difference. Natural-filled zip and link mattresses consistently sleep cooler than synthetic alternatives.
NBF approval
Look for the National Bed Federation approval mark. It confirms the mattress has been made to UK manufacturing standards and that materials and construction claims have been independently verified. Every Lewis and Jones and Hypnos zip and link mattress at Land of Beds is NBF approved.

All product information below is taken directly from the Land of Beds product pages. Both the Lewis and Jones and Hypnos ranges are available with independently specified tensions on each half, so each sleeper gets exactly what they need.

LEWIS AND JONES · EXCLUSIVE TO LAND OF BEDS
Best for: couples needing different firmness on each side
Lewis & Jones Eastbury Comfort Mattress
The Eastbury Comfort is one of the most practical zip and link options for couples who need different levels of support. Each half can be specified independently, so one side can be softer while the other is firmer, without any compromise on construction or quality.

A pocket spring system provides responsive support across both halves, while natural fillings help regulate temperature for two sleepers sharing the same surface. The result is a mattress that feels balanced, breathable, and genuinely tailored to each person.

The combination of firm support and tailored tensions makes it particularly effective for couples with different body weights.

The Hypnos Luna Deluxe is designed for couples who prefer a softer, more cushioned feel without losing underlying support. The pocket spring system provides responsive support across both halves, while the comfort layers offer gentle pressure relief, particularly for shoulders and hips.

In a zip and link configuration, each side can be specified independently, making it a strong choice for couples with slightly different comfort preferences. Natural fillings also help regulate temperature, creating a breathable surface that works well for two sleepers.

Can I order the two halves in different tensions?
Yes, and this is the main reason people choose a zip and link. Each half is specified separately, so one side can be softer while the other is firmer. Both halves do need to come from the same model range, as depth and zip positioning vary between designs.
Will I feel a gap or ridge in the middle?
You will not feel the zip itself, as it sits along the outer edge of each mattress. Some people notice a very slight difference where the two halves meet if they sleep directly in the centre, but most couples do not find it noticeable. A full-width mattress topper will smooth this completely if needed.
Do zip and link mattresses cost more than standard mattresses?
They are usually slightly more expensive than the equivalent non-zip version, due to the additional construction involved. However, because each half can be rotated and wears more evenly, they often offer comparable value over time.
What base do I need for a zip and link mattress?
A zip and link mattress is designed to sit on a matching split divan base, made up of two single bases joined together. Standard one-piece bed frames are not suitable, as they do not support the two separate mattress halves properly.
Can I use a mattress topper with a zip and link?
Yes, and it is often recommended. A topper placed across both halves helps create a more unified feel and softens any slight difference at the join. It can also add an extra layer of comfort depending on your preference.
How do you rotate a zip and link mattress?
Each half is unzipped and rotated individually, head to toe. This is often easier than rotating a full-size mattress, as each piece is a manageable single size. If the mattress is double-sided, each half can also be flipped separately.

Our honest advice

A zip and link mattress is not the right choice for everyone, and we would not want to suggest otherwise. But for the people it suits, it genuinely transforms the sleeping experience. If you and your partner have meaningfully different body weights, different sleeping positions, or a restless sleeper on one side, the case for zip and link is strong. The zero motion transfer alone is worth it for most couples in that situation.

If none of those things apply to you, a high-quality traditional mattress at the same price point will often give you a slightly more seamless feel across the full surface. Come and talk to us though. This is exactly the kind of decision that is worth a conversation rather than a scroll.
