Let’s be honest about something. The mattress industry has a habit of making a fairly straightforward decision feel like you need a degree in materials science to get right. Memory foam. Pocket sprung. Hybrid. Latex. Gel. Orthopaedic. Each one described with such conviction that you end up wondering if choosing the wrong one is somehow going to ruin your life.

It’s not.

But the type of mattress you sleep on does genuinely matter, it affects how well your spine is supported, how much pressure builds up at your hips and shoulders overnight, whether you sleep cool or hot, and how rested you actually feel in the morning. So it’s worth understanding what each construction is actually doing. Not the marketing version. The real version.

Here’s everything you need to know, in plain English, without the drama.

“The type of mattress you choose has a direct impact on your spinal alignment, pressure point relief, and the quality of restorative sleep you achieve each night. There is no universally superior construction. The right type is the one that matches your body, your sleeping position, and your specific physical needs. Understanding the difference between them is the essential first step.”

Memory foam mattresses
The one that hugs you back. Brilliant for pressure relief, just know the heat thing.

Memory foam has been around since 1991. It was originally called slow spring back foam, which is actually a much better description of what it does. When you lie down, it responds to your body heat and weight, softening and moulding to the exact shape of your body. The result is that your body weight is distributed evenly across the surface rather than concentrating at your heaviest points, hips, shoulders, heels. For anyone who wakes up with those areas aching, that matters a lot.

The other thing memory foam is genuinely excellent at is motion isolation. If your partner moves in the night, you probably will not feel it. The foam absorbs rather than transfers movement. For couples where one person is a restless sleeper, this alone can be a game changer. The honest caveat is temperature. Memory foam contours so closely to the body that it can trap heat, particularly in older or cheaper versions. Most modern memory foam uses open cell or gel infused construction to reduce this, but if you sleep hot, it is worth knowing.

Best for
Side sleepers. Those with hip, shoulder, or joint pain. Couples where one partner moves a lot at night.
Worth knowing
Can retain heat. Look for gel infused or open cell versions if you sleep warm. Also available as a topper if you just want to adjust an existing mattress.
Available in
Soft to extra firm. Single, small double, double, king size, super king. Also as a mattress topper.
From Julie Nelson, bed and mattress expert at Land of Beds
“Side sleepers usually do better with the contouring of memory foam or a softer spring tension to relieve pressure on the hips.”

The Viva Supreme Mattress, made exclusively for Land of Beds, combines luxurious comfort with supportive memory foam technology for a deeper, more restful sleep. Designed to gently contour to your body and relieve pressure points, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking for lasting comfort and support night after night.

Pocket sprung mattresses
The most popular type for good reason. Tailored support, brilliant for couples.

Pocket sprung mattresses are consistently the most recommended type at Land of Beds. If you ask our team what they would buy themselves, most of them would point you here. The reason is simple: each spring is individually wrapped in its own fabric pocket. That means every spring moves and responds independently, rather than as part of a connected unit. In practice, this gives you support that responds to the exact shape and weight distribution of your body, not a generic this is where a human being usually lies approximation.

It also means that if your partner rolls over at 2am, you do not feel it. Each spring responds only to the pressure applied directly above it, so movement on their side stays on their side. For couples, this is genuinely one of the most practical things a mattress can do. One thing worth knowing: a higher spring count generally means more precise support, but it is not the only variable. The fillings in the comfort layers above the springs matter just as much to how the mattress actually feels.

Best for
Couples. Back sleepers. Anyone who wants tailored, responsive support. Works well across a wide range of body weights and sleeping positions.
Worth knowing
Better airflow than foam alternatives thanks to the open spring structure. A good choice if you tend to sleep warm. Leading brands include Silentnight, Hypnos, Sealy, and Relyon.
Available in
All tensions from soft to extra firm. All standard UK sizes from single to super king.
From Charley Clarke, bed and mattress expert at Land of Beds
“The independent movement of the pocket springs ensures the body is supported in its natural alignment, reducing pressure points and minimising disturbance between sleeping partners.”

The Hypnos Premier Deluxe Mattress, made exclusively for Land of Beds, combines luxurious natural fillings with advanced pocket spring support to deliver exceptional comfort and pressure relief. Its sumptuous pillow top and breathable British wool make it a perfect choice for a deeper, more supportive night’s sleep whatever your sleeping position.

Open coil mattresses
The traditional spring. Reliable, affordable, does exactly what it says.

The open coil is the original spring mattress. It is what your parents and grandparents slept on, and it is still doing a thoroughly decent job in guest bedrooms and children’s rooms across the country. Unlike pocket sprung, the springs in an open coil mattress are connected together in a single unit. They move as a team rather than independently, which means you get a consistent, even level of support across the whole surface rather than the tailored, body responsive support that individual springs provide.

What you lose in precision you gain in price. Open coil mattresses are almost always the most affordable option in any range, and for the right sleeper in the right context, a single sleeper, a guest room, a child who will outgrow the bed in a few years, they are a completely sensible choice. Just do not share one with a restless partner and expect not to feel every time they move.

Best for
Solo sleepers. Guest rooms. Children’s rooms. Anyone who wants a reliable, no fuss mattress at a fair price.
Worth knowing
Motion transfer is higher than pocket sprung. If you share a bed with a restless sleeper, this will wake you up. Not the right choice for couples.
Available in
All standard UK sizes. Generally the most affordable construction. Multiple tensions available.

The Sealy Nelson Luxury Mattress, handmade exclusively for Land of Beds, features Sealy’s patented AlignSupport™ spring technology, an innovative open coil system designed to deliver deep-down support, excellent spinal alignment, and long-lasting comfort. Combined with premium comfort foams and cooling SmarTex™ technology, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a supportive, breathable mattress with a softer, luxurious feel.

Latex mattresses
Natural, cool, bouncy, and brilliant for allergy sufferers. Seriously underrated.

Latex is one of those mattress types that tends to be overlooked. It does not get the marketing budget that memory foam does, and it is not as immediately recognisable as pocket sprung. Which is a shame, because for the right sleeper it is genuinely one of the best materials available. It comes from the sap of rubber trees, which makes it one of the most natural options out there, and it responds to your body weight and shape to provide tailored pressure relief. Unlike memory foam, it does not retain your body heat. The open cell structure actively encourages airflow, which keeps the surface noticeably cooler.

The other thing that makes latex stand out is its responsiveness. Where memory foam slowly reshapes itself when you move, latex bounces back immediately. If you are a combination sleeper who changes position throughout the night, that difference is surprisingly significant. You are not fighting against the mattress every time you move. Latex also has natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, and its moisture wicking qualities reduce the humid environment dust mites need to thrive. If allergies are a factor in your sleep, this is genuinely the material to consider first.

Best for
Hot sleepers. Allergy sufferers. Combination sleepers who move around a lot. Anyone who wants a natural, eco friendly option.
Worth knowing
Sits at a higher price point than foam, but it also outlasts most foam alternatives significantly. Natural latex is biodegradable and sustainably sourced.
Available in
All standard UK sizes. Also available as a mattress topper, a more affordable way to experience the feel before committing to a full mattress.
From Julie Nelson, bed and mattress expert at Land of Beds
“Latex has a faster bounce back than memory foam and natural properties that make it antimicrobial and antibacterial. The open cell structure encourages airflow throughout the mattress, helping to keep the skin cooler at night, while its moisture wicking properties reduce the conditions that dust mites need to survive.”

The Relyon Stratus Dunlopillo Latex Mattress, made exclusively for Land of Beds, combines responsive pocket spring support with luxurious Dunlopillo latex for outstanding comfort, breathability, and pressure relief. Finished with a plush pillow top and natural fillings including cashmere and silk, it’s an excellent choice for anyone looking for a cooler, more supportive sleep with a touch of luxury.

Gel mattresses
Everything people love about memory foam, but cooler. A genuinely good compromise.

If you have been tempted by memory foam but put off by the heat thing, gel mattresses are essentially the answer to that problem. They are typically gel infused foam mattresses, meaning they have all the qualities that make memory foam so popular, body contouring, pressure relief, motion isolation, but with cooling technology built in. The gel can be added in a few different ways, infused directly into the foam, as a separate gel layer, or through the mattress cover, but the effect is the same. The open cell gel structure draws heat away from the body rather than retaining it.

It is worth saying that temperature experience is personal. What feels hot to one person feels fine to another, so gel mattresses will not be the answer for every warm sleeper. But for those who want the contouring comfort of memory foam without the stuffiness, they are a logical and well proven step up.

Best for
Warm sleepers who want the body contouring benefits of memory foam. All sleeping positions. Pressure relief and spinal support across the whole body.
Worth knowing
If temperature regulation is your primary concern, latex actually outperforms gel in most cases. Gel is the better choice if you specifically want memory foam qualities with less heat.
Available in
All standard UK sizes. Multiple tensions. Often available in hybrid configurations with pocket springs beneath.
From Charley Clarke, bed and mattress expert at Land of Beds
“Gel mattresses are a great middle ground. They give you the pressure relief and contouring of memory foam, but with noticeably better temperature regulation, which makes a real difference if you tend to sleep warm.”

The Lewis & Jones Tranquillity Mattress, made exclusively for Land of Beds, combines supportive pocket spring technology with pressure-relieving gel foam to deliver a firmer, more refreshing night’s sleep. Designed for excellent spinal support, breathability, and long-lasting comfort, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a supportive mattress with a luxurious feel.

Hybrid mattresses
Springs plus foam or latex. The I want both option, and it genuinely delivers.

A hybrid mattress does exactly what the name suggests. It combines pocket springs with foam, latex, or gel layers to give you the best of both. The pocket spring core does the structural work. It responds independently to your movements, keeps your spine aligned, and allows the airflow that pure foam mattresses can struggle with. The comfort layers on top, memory foam, latex, gel, or a combination, do the pressure relief work. Cushioning the hips, shoulders, and knees, and contouring to your body shape. The result is a mattress that is responsive enough for back sleepers, cushioning enough for side sleepers, and cool enough for warm sleepers.

In all honesty, if someone comes to us genuinely unsure which type of mattress to choose, a hybrid is often where we end up. It is not a cop out recommendation. It is the construction that removes the most compromises for the most sleepers. Particularly good for couples, particularly good for anyone who switches positions, and particularly good for anyone who finds themselves stuck between wanting the support of springs and the comfort of foam.

Best for
Most sleepers and most positions. Couples. Anyone who moves between pocket sprung and memory foam and cannot decide.
Worth knowing
Available across a wide range of price points and configurations. Foam hybrid, latex hybrid, gel hybrid, and natural fibre hybrid. Worth specifying which combination you want.
Available in
All tensions. All standard UK sizes. Brands include Silentnight, Sealy, and Emma, among others.
From Charley Clarke, bed and mattress expert at Land of Beds
“Hybrid mattresses bring together the best elements of springs and foam or latex. You get the support and airflow of pocket springs, combined with the pressure relief and comfort of the top layers, which makes them one of the most versatile options for a wide range of sleepers.”

The Viva True Air Hybrid Comfort Mattress, made exclusively for Land of Beds, combines responsive pocket spring support with breathable comfort layers to create a cooler, fresher night’s sleep. Designed to deliver the perfect balance of pressure relief, airflow, and body support, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking for hybrid comfort with a luxurious medium feel.

Orthopaedic mattresses
Maximum support. Not just for bad backs, but definitely for bad backs.

Orthopaedic is a design intent rather than a specific construction. It means the mattress has been built with maximum spinal support as the primary goal, and that intent can be achieved through memory foam, pocket springs, latex, or hybrid builds. What they have in common is that they are firmer than standard mattresses, designed to keep the spine in a healthy, natural position and distribute body weight evenly rather than allowing it to concentrate at any single point.

They are most commonly associated with back pain, which is fair, but it is worth being clear that orthopaedic does not automatically mean right for all back pain. Some back conditions respond better to more cushioning rather than more firmness. If you have a chronic issue, it is worth speaking to a healthcare professional before making a significant mattress investment. What orthopaedic mattresses are excellent for is heavier sleepers who need more structural support, back and front sleepers who need a flatter, firmer surface, and anyone whose sleep is regularly disrupted by physical discomfort. Most of our orthopaedic range at Land of Beds is NBF approved, independently tested to UK manufacturing standards.

Best for
Heavier sleepers. Back and front sleepers. Those with chronic lower back pain or joint issues. Anyone who wakes regularly with physical discomfort.
Worth knowing
Orthopaedic does not mean right for all back pain. Some conditions need cushioning more than firmness. When in doubt, consult a healthcare professional first.
Available in
Memory foam, pocket sprung, latex, and hybrid builds. All standard UK sizes. Most NBF approved.
From Charlotte Blythe, bed and mattress expert at Land of Beds
“Back sleepers often benefit from the sturdier support of an orthopaedic or firmer pocket sprung mattress. However, the relationship between mattress firmness and back pain is personal. Anyone with a chronic condition should seek professional advice before making a decision.”

The Hypnos Ortho Gold Mattress, made exclusively for Land of Beds, combines Hypnos’s advanced ReActive™ pocket spring technology with luxurious natural fillings to deliver exceptional support and comfort throughout the night. Designed with a firmer feel to promote healthy spinal alignment and pressure relief, it’s an excellent choice for anyone looking for orthopaedic-style support without compromising on luxury.

How to actually choose between them
Four questions that narrow this down faster than any quiz.
Do you sleep hot?
Latex is your strongest option. The open cell structure actively encourages airflow and keeps the surface cooler than anything else. Gel mattresses are the next best bet if you specifically want memory foam qualities with less heat. Hybrid mattresses also offer better temperature regulation than pure foam, because the spring core allows air to move through the mattress. Standard memory foam without gel infusion is the one to approach with caution if you already know you run warm.
Do you share a bed?
Prioritise motion isolation. Memory foam and gel mattresses are the best in class here. They absorb movement rather than transferring it. Pocket sprung mattresses also perform very well, because the individual springs respond independently. Open coil mattresses are the weakest option for couples. The connected spring system transfers movement across the surface, which will wake a light sleeper.
Do you have allergies?
Latex is the clear winner. It is naturally antimicrobial, antibacterial, and hypoallergenic, with moisture wicking properties that actively reduce the conditions dust mites need to survive. If a full latex mattress is not in the budget, a latex or anti allergy memory foam topper is a good intermediate step. It will not transform the mattress entirely, but it will make a meaningful difference to the sleeping surface.
Do you have back pain?
It depends on the cause, not just firmness. We recommend speaking to one of our experts, or your GP if it is a persistent issue, rather than defaulting to firm. Memory foam is excellent for pressure related pain at the hips and shoulders. Pocket sprung and orthopaedic mattresses are generally better for lower back structural support. Hybrids offer a balance of both and are a sensible starting point if you are not sure which category you fall into.
Frequently asked questions
Which type lasts longest?
Latex mattresses typically have the longest lifespan. The natural resilience of the material means they hold their shape and support significantly longer than most foam alternatives. High quality pocket sprung mattresses are close behind, particularly when rotated regularly. As a general rule, a quality mattress of any construction, properly cared for, should last seven to ten years.
Is memory foam good for back pain?
It can be, particularly for pain caused by pressure concentration at the hips and shoulders, where the body contouring quality of memory foam distributes weight more evenly. But it is not automatically the answer for all back issues. Softer memory foam on the wrong tension for your body weight can actually worsen pain by allowing the spine to sag. If you have a chronic issue, it is worth getting professional advice before buying.
What is the difference between pocket sprung and open coil?
The key difference is independence. In a pocket sprung mattress, each spring moves individually in response to pressure. In an open coil mattress, the springs are connected and move together. Pocket sprung gives you tailored support and better motion isolation. Open coil gives you consistent support at a lower price point. For couples or those who need precision support, pocket sprung is usually the better choice.
Are hybrid mattresses worth it?
For most people, yes. They remove the biggest compromises. The spring core provides support and airflow, while the foam or latex layers handle pressure relief and comfort. If you find yourself choosing between spring and foam, a hybrid is often the option that resolves that decision.
Can I use a memory foam mattress on any bed frame?
Most memory foam mattresses work well on slatted bases, as long as the slats are no more than 7 to 8 cm apart to provide even support. Solid platform bases also work. If you have an adjustable bed, you will need a mattress designed to flex with it. Not all memory foam mattresses are suitable, so it is worth checking compatibility before buying.
