Can a mattress help you sleep better?

Put simply, YES! Although many people are aware that lack of sleep impacts on how they feel the next day, many do not recognise the significant role their mattress plays in the quality of sleep achieved each night.

At Land of Beds, we are passionate about helping as many people as possible to sleep better. We recognise that buying a new mattress can be a very daunting experience with so many brands and types available and often, large price tags. As we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed, replacing our mattresses every 7 years, on average (that equates to roughly 20,000 hours spent lying on it before it is replaced), it is crucial that your purchase is the right one for YOU and your sleeping needs.

As an independent supplier of some of the biggest brands including: Hypnos, Silentnight, Tempur, Sleepeezee, Sealy, Emma, Vispring, Harrison-Spinks, Dormeo, Relyon, Healthbeds, Nectar, Dunlopillo plus many, many more, we have something to suit all needs and price points and offer free, impartial advice to ensure your purchase is the correct one.

Better sleep = better you!

A mattress is a crucial factor affecting the quantity and quality of your sleep. However, with 1000s of diverse types and sizes available and differing tensions, fillings, and feels, finding the right one can feel very daunting.

As our motto says, ‘A good night’s sleep begins with a great bed!’ A mattress with the proper support, comfort and space will significantly improve your sleep quality. Consequently, it will leave you feeling refreshed upon waking and help to improve your memory and mood levels. On the other hand, the wrong type will significantly impact your sleep quality and overall health and well-being. Poor sleep prevents your brain and body from repairing and recovering each night, leading to various health issues. Therefore, choosing the right sleeping platform for your needs is essential to ensure you get the best possible sleep.

It is important to note that the ‘right’ mattress for one person, might not be the best suited to another as everyone’s sleep needs are different. This can make professional, independent advice extremely useful as opposed to going off recommendations from friends and family. Our team of bed experts will help you to choose one that suits your requirements and leave you waking feeling refreshed and therefore ready to tackle the day ahead.

Mattress considerations and necessities

Budget!

When shopping for a new mattress, budget obviously must be a crucial factor. We believe investing in a good mattress is worth it due to the amount of time spent in bed. (We spend approximately 33 years of our life in bed!) Mattress prices vary significantly with the price being largely dependent on the type of mattress however, if you spend £1000 on a new mattress, this equates to less than 40 pence per night over seven years (or 20 pence per person if you share the bed!). Mattresses can vary greatly in price, so consider your budget and the features and benefits you’re looking for.

If, on the rare occasion, a competitor offers a like-for-like product cheaper, where possible, we will always aim to match their price while still providing you with our award-winning service as standard! We have a range of finance options available to help you when making a purchase. Applications take approximately 10 minutes and can be completed in store, over the telephone or from the comfort of your own home.

Mattress Size

Room size, number of sleepers using the bed each night, body type and size plus the bed frame being used should all be taken into consideration when choosing the ‘right’ size mattress. The length and width of your bed frame must also be taken into consideration when making a purchase.

We supply a wide range of sizes including standard UK sizes, European sizes and non-standard.

Our advice is the bigger the mattress the better! Our reason for this is more space = less disturbance = a better night’s sleep. Therefore, we recommend buying a mattress as big as your space and budget allows. See our bed size buying guide for further information.

Mattress Firmness

There is a common misconception that the firmness of a mattress affects its support. Firmness and comfort are subjective and does not equate to support. When talking about firmness levels, this is decided by how far a sleeper sinks into their mattress.

Currently, there is no set industry standard specification for a mattress’s firmness rating with many manufacturers using their own unique scoring system. As a result, this means grades can vary widely by brand.

When buying a new mattress consider your preferred level of firmness, as well as any specific needs or preferences you have (such as side-sleeping or back pain).

All tension gradings are clearly shown on our mattresses at Land of Beds and our bed experts are on hand to guide you further.

Mattress tensions

How firm or soft you like your mattress is down to personal choice, however, it is important to bear in mind that your body weight also plays a role, for example, a heavier set sleepers will find a mattress softer than a lighter set person.

Soft

Soft mattresses provide a high level of cushioning. They are generally preferred by people who sleep on their side, as well as those who want a plush and cushioned sleeping surface. Generally suited to lighter weight individuals, a soft mattress may not provide enough support for heavier individuals, which may cause back pain or discomfort over time.

Medium

Medium tension mattresses are designed to provide a comfortable and supportive sleep surface, and they are suitable for a wide range of sleepers. They are often preferred by people who sleep in different positions, those who want a balance of support and comfort, and those who don’t want a sleeping surface that is too firm or too soft. They are often referred to as offering universal comfort, supplying the perfect balance between soft and firm.

Firm

Firm mattresses are often recommended for heavier individuals, as they provide high support and can help maintain proper spinal alignment. Additionally, heavier people tend to put more pressure on a mattress, which can cause it to sag over time. However, a firm mattress is more resistant to sagging and can help distribute weight more evenly. This can help to alleviate pressure points and prevent discomfort or pain while sleeping. It’s worth noting that the firmness of a mattress is a personal preference, and it’s essential to find the right balance between comfort and support. It’s also important to consider the mattress’s materials and construction, as these factors can affect its overall firmness and durability. Firm mattresses are generally preferred by people who sleep on their back or stomach, as well as those who have back pain or other spinal alignment issues.

Tension Gradings at Land of Beds

  • 1 = Soft – Good for side sleepers. The softest level of support.
  • 2 = Soft medium – Good for side sleepers who require a little more support.
  • 3 = Medium – Good all-rounder for front, side, or back sleepers.
  • 4 = Medium firm – Good for people who change sleeping position.
  • 5 = Firm – Good for people who sleep on their front or back.
  • 6 = Extra firm – The firmest level of support. These are also known as orthopaedic mattresses.

Mattress depth

Another common myth in the bed world is that the thickness of a mattress defines its level of comfort. While a thicker mattress could potentially offer more comfort and support, the type of materials and the quality and makeup of the layers is equally as important.

Mattress thickness influences how manufacturers design and make a mattress and subsequently plays a significant role in the cost of it. Thicker mattresses naturally require more material, so are automatically more expensive than thinner alternatives. However, 25cm/10″ of memory foam does not necessarily mean more comfort when compared to a 15cm/6″ foam mattress that boasts a superior layered system. A thinner mattress is more likely to be subject to wear and tear at a quicker rate.

Mattresses with a depth of 30cm/12″ and above (deep, thick profiles) are generally considered a luxurious choice. Designed with unique comfort layers, they are typically composed of varied materials that significantly increase its durability, support, and comfortability.

Mattresses with a depth of 20cm – 28cm/8-11″ (medium-standard profile) are typically suited to all sleeping types and indeed offer a sumptuous, supportive feel.

Low profile mattresses with a depth of 15cm/6″ or less are not ideal for long-term comfort as their design capabilities generally fail to provide adequate support and pressure relief.

Mattress fillings

With numerous fillings on offer, and new products continually being brought to the marketplace, it can result in bed shopping becoming a daunting, confusing, and frustrating experience – never mind expensive! When buying a new mattress consider which materials you prefer and what benefits they offer. Our mattress filling guide details the various options available and our team of bed experts are on hand to recommend further.

Our top 3 mattress recommendations for sleepers with bad backs

Eight in ten people are affected by back pain at some point in their life. Sleeping on a bed that offers the best comfort and support while keeping the spine aligned can make all the difference between a good night’s sleep and a great next day.

If your back hurts the most in the morning, your mattress could be worsening your symptoms. Inspect it for sagging, which suggests that it is not supporting your weight effectively. (This could be due to it being too soft for your needs or simply too old and in need of replacement.)

Top tips for sleepers with back pain

Posture is as important when you’re lying down as when you’re sitting and standing. Sleeping in a position that minimises spinal movement, will hopefully result in less pain, because the more your spine twists, the more painful and stiffer it will feel.

Where possible, we recommend sleepers suffering from back pain to sleep on their side. When on your side, partially bend your knees to balance the body then place a pillow under your neck and between your knees to supply added comfort.

If you find sleeping on your side uncomfortable, lying on your back in a reclined position, and placing a pillow or two behind your knees and another beneath your lower back will help ensure it gets enough support and will also help maintain the normal curve of your lower back.

Front sleepers benefit from using a pillow under their pelvis and lower abdomen. This position is particularly suited to sleepers suffering from degenerative disc disease as it can help to reduce stress that rests on the space between the discs.

Our top 3 mattress recommendations for side sleepers

Side sleeping is the most common sleeping position, with more than half of British adults choosing to sleep in this position. Often referred to as the lateral sleeping position, although an extremely popular position, sleepers might find they have back discomfort if sleeping on a mattress that supplies inappropriate support. This is due to the spine having less flexibility bending sideways. As such, side sleepers should look for a mattress that supplies proper support at different body segments in order to straighten their spine as they sleep.

To ensure that vulnerable pressure points (ears, shoulders, and hips) are cushioned, and that the spine is aligned when sleeping on your side, we recommend opting for a medium comfort grade mattress. A mattress that is too soft will cause the body to sink into the mattress, offering little support and resulting in curvature of the spine, which will in turn lead to body aches and pains. A mattress that is too firm will put pressure on parts of your body which could lead to pain, particularly around the neck and shoulders.

Research suggests that a side sleeping position has many health benefits, including helping to relieve symptoms of heartburn and digestive complaints. When done correctly, side sleeping can reduce joint and low back pain, making it a popular position amongst sleepers suffering from fibromyalgia. It can also help to reduce snoring and reduce breathing difficulties – great for those with sleep apnoea. Memory foam, gel and latex mattresses are popular choices amongst side sleepers.

Top tips for side sleepers

Sleep with a deep, supportive pillow, especially if you have wide shoulders. This will help to ensure that your head and neck are supported and naturally aligned. Slim pillows will result in the gap between your head and shoulders being unsupported which will in turn cause your head to fall too low, and result in poor spinal alignment.

In order to prevent shoulder injury (caused by your shoulder muscles pinching), make sure that your arms are down by your side as you sleep.

Sleeping with a pillow between your legs will consequently help to reduce any extra strain to your back.

Family asleep lying on their sides.

Our top 3 mattress recommendations for front and back sleepers

Front sleepers

Sleepers opting to sleep on their front are most vulnerable to back pain, due to the position of their spine, therefore, it is essential that you get the right mattress. We recommend choosing a medium or firm mattress, as this will help to ensure your spine is aligned and well supported (the focus for front sleepers.) Choosing a mattress that is too soft will result in you sinking into the mattress causing your spine to arch. This will lead to back problems, aches, and pains. If you weigh more than 14 stone, or are prone to back problems, we recommend opting for a firmer feel mattress as this will supply you with greater support.

Sleeping on your stomach can be an advantageous position for snorers and sleepers with sleep apnoea as this position keeps the airways open. Stomach sleepers often benefit from pocket spring or memory foam mattresses as these help to ensure weight is evenly distributed as you sleep.

Back sleepers

Sleeping on your back is widely considered by sleep experts to be the healthiest and most beneficial sleeping position. Sleeping on your back can significantly improve your spinal alignment, and furthermore, relieve aches and pains, reduce sinus build up and lower your chances of experiencing acid reflux. However, this sleeping position is not recommended for those who are pregnant, have sleep apnoea, or snore.

Spine alignment is crucial for those sleeping on their back. We recommend sleepers choose a firmer comfort grade to allow the back to curve into the mattress. Mattresses recommended for back sleepers include traditional spring, pocket spring, memory foam and orthopaedic mattresses.

Top tips for front sleepers

When sleeping on your stomach, due to the weight of your torso, you will naturally sink into your mattress resulting in your back arching and your spine being misaligned. Therefore, the focus area for front sleepers is ensuring good spinal alignment, ensuring that your neck and shoulders are mostly aligned as you sleep. Sleeping with no pillow will keep your neck better aligned with the rest of your body. However, if you do choose to use a pillow, we recommend choosing a flat pillow that you can sink into as this will help you to keep a good posture.

Sleeping with a pillow beneath your pelvis will certainly help to support your hips and keeps your spine better aligned.

Upon waking, it is advisable to do some stretches to mitigate any muscle strain caused because of sleeping on your stomach.

Lady asleep lying on her back.

Top tips for back sleepers

A slim to medium depth pillow is best suited to back sleepers. As the head and neck are already mostly level with your spine in this sleeping position, using the correct pillow will certainly ensure better spinal alignment and therefore prevent back and neck problems.

Placing a pillow under your knees will certainly help support the normal curve of your lower back. Enhanced support and tension relief can also be found by placing a small, rolled towel under your knees or the small of your back.

Spread out! Aside from the health benefits of sleeping on your back, another plus is that you can spread out rather than feeling restricted and having to keep your limbs in certain positions. Back sleepers can choose to spread their arms out, lift them above their head or leave them to hang down by their side…anything goes in this position when trying to achieve a great night’s sleep!

Those looking to train themselves to sleep on their back could consider placing pillows around them to prevent rolling and turning over in the middle of the night.

Do you ever wake up soaked in sweat? Are you prone to kicking the duvet covers off each night? Does it take you a while to get to sleep at night due to feeling too hot? Between 10-41% of sleepers are thought to be ‘hot sleepers’ with a wide range of probable causes being responsible including medication, infections, neurological disorders, menopause and even your mattress choice!

If you tend to sleep hot, look for a mattress that offers cooling properties. For example, gel, latex and pocket spring mattresses are a good option for hot sleepers as they allow air circulation. Synthetic foam and memory foam mattresses, however, tend to retain heat. If you do have a memory foam mattress and can’t afford to change it, it can be cooled down slightly by using a cooling mattress protector, cooling pad and/or cooling bedding.

Top tips for hot sleepers

Where possible, make sure your mattress is naturally cooling as opposed to heat keeping. Choosing the correct bedding (e.g., cotton-rich, or natural fibre blends) can also help to reduce heat as you sleep. Leaving a window ajar at night will help to ensure that cooler air can circulate within in your room. Opening a window an hour before bed can help ensure your mattress is cool when you get into it.

Make sure your mattress is the right size for the number of people sleeping in it. Larger mattresses can result in a cooler night sleep as there is more airflow between you and your partner. Our mattress and bed size guide details everything you need to know about bed sizes and who they are most suited to.

Ensuring you are hydrated and avoiding late night snacks can also help reduce your core body temperature as you sleep.

Our top 3 Memory foam mattresses

Known for their ability to relieve pressure points, reduce motion transfer, and provide good spinal alignment, memory foam mattresses are durable and long-lasting.

Made of viscoelastic foam, this type of foam conforms to the shape of the person sleeping on it, providing support and cushioning. Conforming to the shape of your body, providing support and cushioning that can help alleviate pressure points, such as those on your hips and shoulders, memory foam is well known for having pressure relieving properties. Memory foam can help keep your spine in a neutral position, which can reduce back pain and improve overall comfort. It is good at reducing motion transfer, which means that if you sleep with a partner, their movements will be less likely to disturb you. Being hypoallergenic, memory foam is resistant to dust mites, mould, and mildew, which makes them a great option for people with allergies or asthma.

Top tips when sleeping on a memory foam mattress

Make sure your memory foam mattress is the right firmness for you. A mattress that is too soft or too firm can cause discomfort and disrupt your sleep. If your mattress is too firm, consider using a mattress topper as this will provide additional cushioning and significantly, improve comfort. In addition, using a breathable mattress protector will help to keep your memory foam mattress cool and dry.

Use a pillow that supports your sleeping position and neck as this will undoubtedly reduce the likelihood of aches and pains. Memory foam pillows can be a viable choice

Top tips when sleeping on a budget mattress

A budget mattress may not have the same level of comfort or support as a more expensive one, so it’s important to set realistic expectations and make adjustments as needed.

Using a mattress topper can provide an extra layer of comfort and support for a budget mattress. Memory foam or latex toppers can be particularly effective in adding a plush feel to a budget mattress.

Make sure you use a supportive foundation such as a box spring or platform bed as this can help to provide additional support for your mattress and can help to improve your overall sleep comfort. (Shop our collection of bed frames.)

To prolong your mattress’s lifespan, rotate and flip it regularly (although it’s worth noting that not all mattresses require flipping – be sure to check the care label on your specific product). This helps distribute wear and tear evenly. Use a mattress protector to shield against spills and keep it clean to remove dirt and dust. Additionally, avoid jumping on the bed. Taking these steps ensures your mattress stays in top condition for restful nights of sleep. Also, keeping your mattress clean can help to remove dirt and dust that can accumulate over time and again can prolong the life of your mattress. Use a mattress protector to protect your mattress from spills.

Invest in good bedding! Good quality sheets (flat or fitted), pillows and duvet can also improve the comfort of a budget mattress.

We recommend experimenting with different sleeping positions to find the one that is most comfortable for you when sleeping on a budget mattress.
